According to the philosophy statement for SCCC, education and learning are lifelong activities. Intellectual skills are important tools for productive, lifelong learning and include reading, mathematics, critical thinking, and information literacy.

Reading Outcome

Read with comprehension, be critical of what they read, and apply knowledge gained to real situations.

  • Students can meet this learning outcome by taking general education courses in the areas listed below or through a combination of coursework and approved educational experiences in any SCCC program.
    • English

    • Fine Arts and Humanities

  • Courses that meet this outcome must proved learning experiences in the following skill sets through assignments, projects, or work experiences:
    • Skill Set A: Read with comprehension
      • Identifies the purpose and main idea(s)
      • Describes the organizational patterns, tone, audience, bias, and point of view
         
    • Skill Set B: Read critically
      • Identifies the underlying ideas of the writer such as assumptions, facts, and inferences
      • Evaluates the logic and accuracy of evidence in support of the writer's main idea
      • Accepts or rejects claims proposed in written materials based on logic and reasoning
         
    • Skill Set C: Apply knowledge gained to real life situations

Mathematics Outcome

Demonstrate mathematical skills using a variety of techniques and technologies.

    • Skill Set B: Commnicate mathematical information effectively using symbols, visual, numerical, or verbal representations.
       
    • Skill Set C: Use or interpret mathematical models such as formulas, graphs, tables, scematics, and draw inferences from them.
       
    • Skill Set D: Evaluate the soundness and accuracy of conclusions derived from quantitative information.

Demonstrate the ability to think critically by gathering facts, generating insights, analyzing data, and evaluating information.
