The natural gas compression technology program offered by Seward County Community College prepares students for entrance into the natural gas industry as entry level maintenance technicians. Through cooperation with regional natural gas industry leaders, SCCC is able to provide students with the most up-to-date training required by this dynamic industry. The natural gas industry has long been a major employer within the Liberal, Kansas area and the larger region as a whole.
Students in the natural gas compression technology program learn precision measurement, workplace skills, engine theory, basic electricity and circuits, metal fabrication, basic welding, repairing compressors and engines, compressor theory, mounting and aligning compressors, and preventative maintenance of engines and compressors. Our students participate in an internship at the end of their program of study to prepare them for the workforce and give them experience working with a company in the industry.
The natural gas compression technology program is located in the energy sector of the auto body building and includes many opportunities for hands-on learning, from small three-cylinder engines to large 12-cylinder engines and both reciprocating compressors as well as screw compressors. Students may also be able to participate in additional hands-on opportunities including an operating engine and compressor packages. These packages connect to pipelines to allow students real-world experiences with natural gas engines and compressors before going into the field. The packages even allow for faults to be interjected so that students can learn troubleshooting and resolution techniques. The hands-on experiences that our facilities provide allow for students to directly apply the knowledge gained in the classroom and prepare for their future in the workforce.
