Overview
A degree in education prepares students to facilitate learning to individuals of many different age levels in multiple opportunities. Students in the SCCC education program are provided with the general education requirements and introductory educational courses needed to transfer to a professional education program at a four-year institution. Students who pursue an education degree need to acquire strong basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. The SCCC education program offers the opportunity to take part in SPEC, Students Promoting Education Careers. As part of this on-campus organization, students are able to learn more about becoming an educator and participate in sharing and social activities related to the education profession.
Seward County Community College can provide you with the general education requirements and introductory educational courses you will need to transfer to the professional education program at a four-year institution. In addition, these courses will help you evaluate your decision to be involved in this demanding and rewarding profession.
Qualifications
Students who are interested in becoming educators need to acquire strong basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. In addition, they should be creative, organized, articulate, and flexible.
Advising Information
Your SCCC education department advisor will help you plan your course of study and will outline the specific requirements for completion of an associate’s degree. You need to contact the Admissions Office to visit the campus and meet with an advisor at the time of your visit. The education course of study is designed to prepare the student for transfer into a university program to complete a bachelor’s degree in education.

Curriculum
Elementary Education
The Associate of Arts degree is a two-year degree that prepares students to transfer to a four-year liberal arts school to complete their full degree in their chosen field. Fundamentals of the industry are a core emphasis, but general education requirements make up the bulk of the curriculum. In elementary education, prospective teachers will learn about childhood development and classroom skills for young learners.
Secondary Education
The Associate of Arts degree is a two-year degree that prepares students to transfer to a four-year liberal arts school to complete their full degree in their chosen field. Fundamentals of the industry are a core emphasis, but general education requirements make up the bulk of the curriculum. In secondary education, students will begin exploring a specific focus subject that they wish to teach in. Common examples include math, science, history, English, etc.
